For the first time in 64 years, the Wales national football team qualified for the World Cup. The Dragons have been part of the qualifying process of every World Cup since 1950, but only did they successfully enter the official competition in 1958.

That year, the Welsh reached the quarterfinals stage before being eliminated by the Brazilians, the ultimate winner of the 1958 cup. This November, after 64 years, the Wales football team will have yet another chance to reach the finals and emerge victorious.

An overview of Wales’ participation in the World Cup

The Soccer World Cup, or simply the World Cup, is one of the most popular events in the sports world. The 1958 FIFA World Cup was the sixth football tournament after the Second World War. It was hosted by Sweden, and, during the qualification process, FIFA made the split for the Home Nations for the first time. So, the Wales football team was drawn into Group 4 alongside East Germany and Czechoslovakia.

In the final game in Stockholm, the Brazilians beat the Swedes with a score of 5-2. At that tournament, the 17-year-old Pelé made his debut on the international football world stage. Thanks to his contribution as a forward, the Brazilians managed to beat Wales and Sweden, emerging victorious.

Ever since, Wales has only managed to reach the quarter-finals in a major competition; that being the Euro of 2016. After successfully qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, The Dragons have sparked much enthusiasm amongst their supporters.

Earlier, in June, Wales football players earned their tickets to Qatar after winning against the Ukrainian team during the last playoff game of this tournament. The game was held at Cardiff City Stadium and the Welsh performed well, showing all the passion and commitment that resulted in the score of 1-0.

FIFA World Cup 2022

FIFA World Cup is a football competition between international associations that is held by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). This is the main governing body in the football world today. Ever since the first tournament back in 1930, the World Cup has been held every four years except for 1942 and 1946 due to the Second World War. As already mentioned, The Dragons have been part of the qualifying process, but have managed to actually take part in the tournament twice: in 1958 and 2022.

The World Cup 2022 will take place in Qatar starting from November 2o to December 18. 32 games will be held in total. The teams have already been divided into eight groups. On November 20, the first match (Group A) will see the hosts play against Ecuador.

On the second day of the tournament, November 21, Wales will face the United States. On the same day, England will face Iran in Group B. The match will take place only eight days after the Premier League final, which will be a significant challenge for the English. Later, on November 29, England and Wales will face off.
